Marriage Counseling Supervision Externship

Supervision as an experience of working alongside a seasoned marriage counselor

Marriage Counseling presents many challenges: handling intense conflict and anger , allying with both marital or relationship partners and forming the alliance.  Often dealing with couples feels like being thrown into the lions’ den.  Most therapists find doing individual psychotherapy much more relaxed.  The clients has the time to unfold the problem and reveal, as the person is ready, the issues and problems that will be the focus of the therapy.

In marital counseling clients come with heated, well-worn dances of fruitless debates.  They often want to focus on who’s right or who’s wrong.  The marriage counselor must take on  the challenge of helping them move towards:  listening effectively , finding win-win solutions and helping them trust each other enough to reveal the pain underneath.

In times past most  students learned their art or craft by working directly with a seasoned professional.  I believe that one of the most effective ways to learn this art is to work with a seasoned therapist who can model in the sessions an approach that embodies in a living and vivid way, all of the marriage counseling theory that you have read about.

In my work I have a few slots for a marriage counseling externship at my New York City office. I enjoy working with a student xntern as a co-therapist.  I usually offer this work with a woman so that we represent a male-female team.  Couples tend to see this as resource for them to be understood and challenged by members of both sexes.   Over a period of time  the extern begins to experience the evolving process of making a difference in a couple’s life.  In this work , the intern will be invited to participate in the counseling sessions and to reflect with me about the dynamics that have emerged and the interventions that have worked and not worked.  Both of us will be involved with interacting with the couple.  If you are interested in participating in this externship, give me a call at 914 548 8645 to work in my New York City Office at 115 East 57th Street between Park and Lexington Avenues.
